MCSE Certification Case Study
In December 1999, the Hydro-Electric Corporation, Aurora Energy and Transend
announced the decision to outsource the current core IT services by June
30th, 2000. Managed Information Technology Solutions Limited (MITS) was selected as the main
provider of IT services for the companies, and PriceWaterhouse-Coopers was
selected to provide services for Aurora's Frontline billing and customer
information. The two companies combined intend to engage approximately 70 employees in
Tasmania.
The Hydro was committed to ensuring its IT staff were well equipped to gain
future employment, either with one of the selected service providers or
elsewhere. They felt that one of the best ways to achieve this was by
encouraging their staff to gain Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
certification. As the only Microsoft Certified Technical Education Centre
in Tasmania, the Hydro turned to The Quill Consultancy to provide
technical training to the staff.
Due to the number of employees attending the training, the Hydro needed a
program that allowed their employees to attend out of regular hours. The
Quill was able to structure a program to suit the requirements of the
Hydro, by providing a flexible evening program for each course, run over a
three-week period. Some weekend attendances were also required.
In a four-month period, over thirty staff moved through the
program, covering the following courses:
- Accelerated Training for NT Server (Administering NT Server and Core Technologies of NT4 courses combined)
- Accelerated TCP/IP and Enterprise
- System Administration for Microsoft SQL Server
- Proxy Server Administration
As a result, many of the Hydro employees have sat the necessary exams and are
now well on the way to certification. Due to the volume of attendees, the Quill Consultancy was able to
offer a significant discount to the Hydro.
