It must be a familiar story at this time of the year. Now that the holidays are over and the days are getting shorter you've decided to go through all those photos you took on you trip away with the new digital camera that the kids gave you for Christmas. You've plugged the computer into the television set in preparation for a good old-fashioned slide evening, only to find that the image resolution from the camera exceeds the capability of the TV set. You know that you can change the dimensions of an image using the graphics software that came with the camera but there are hundreds of pictures and it would take forever to convert them. Isn't there an easy way? This is the scenario that faced one of the Quill's staff members after the Christmas break and it caused us to search for a suitable software application that would solve the problem. What we wanted was an application that could change the dimensions of multiple images in a batch process. Thanks to the wonders of Google and the Internet we very quickly identified a suitable tool called Irfanview. After downloading and installing the file and a few minutes of experimentation we were able to establish a process that would convert the resolution of all the images in a nominated folder and save each image with an appropriate file name. Over a couple of evenings hundreds of images were modified and the slide evening was able to proceed, much to the delight of the kids! Irfanview is available for download from www.irfanview.com.Its best feature is that it is free.
